It was the day of emancipation for the traditional Indian Handloom saree business, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi publically announced August 7 as National Handloom Day, connecting with the year 1905, the year of Swadeshi movement. August 7, 1905 was the eventful day in the history as far as Indian Handloom Business is concerned, as proclamation of the "Swadeshi Movement" was made in a meeting organized at the Calcutta Town hall.

The PM urged the masses for using the Indian made handloom products. During his speech on the occasion, Prime Minister said, "The handloom sector in India is stronghold of India's economy, and we should work together to increase the use of handloom products in our daily lives. Moreover, the e-commerce sector should set out working strategies to increase the sale of Indian handloom products like sarees, kurtas etc."
